How to set up a drawing set that stays readable

• One layer for everything you need to switch off
  If the electrical system and the furniture sit on the same layer, the socket plan comes out full of furniture. Separating by discipline lets you print each sheet showing only what it needs.
• Draw by colour, let printing decide the weight
  With the CTB style the colour of a line becomes its thickness on paper. Changing the weight by hand, object by object, breaks the consistency between sheets.
• Dimensions follow the sheet scale
  Text and dimension styles are ready for different scales: you pick the one for the sheet instead of enlarging texts by eye, which is the quickest way to unreadable dimensions.
• Each thematic sheet carries its own legend
  Whoever reads the lighting plan should not have to look for the meaning of the symbols on another sheet. The legends by area are there for that.
• The sheet size is chosen before drawing
  Moving from an A3 to an A1 once the project is finished forces you to redo layout and scales. The ARCH sizes are for when the client works with American measurements.

  The warnings that apply to every project sit in a single block, to be updated once and not sheet by sheet.
• Millimetres from start to finish
  The whole pack is in millimetres. A block taken from a drawing in inches can come in twenty-five times smaller if the units are not set: it is worth checking them before inserting it.
