The Autodesk ReCap Photo module creates 3D models from photographic sequences taken with drones or cameras using advanced photogrammetry algorithms. The results can be exported in RCP/RCS format for use in AutoCAD and Revit.

How a laser survey gets into a project

• The scans are aligned before anything else
  Every scanner station produces its own cloud. Until they are registered onto each other, the survey is a heap of badly overlapping clouds and nothing can be dimensioned.
• Alignment works better if the survey was done well
  Targets visible from two stations, overlap between the scans, no rooms captured from a single point. Anyone going out without this scheme loses in the office the time they saved on site.
• The raw cloud has to be cleaned
  People walking past, reflections on glass, the scanner's own tripod: everything ends up inside. Removing the noise before exporting avoids chasing ghost points inside the project.
• The coordinate system is decided straight away
  If the survey has to match an existing model or the land registry coordinates, the georeferencing is set here. Redoing it later means redoing the alignment.
• The cloud does not go inside the project, it is linked
  In AutoCAD, Revit and Navisworks the cloud stays an attached external file. Move or rename that file and the project opens empty: it belongs with the references, not on the desktop.

  A complete survey weighs tens of gigabytes. You crop the part needed for the floor you are working on, instead of loading the whole building at every opening.

  Turning the cloud into a closed surface is for 3D printing or for graphics, not for designing: to dimension and model you work on the points.

  The cloud project file, the coordinate system used, the date of the survey and a note on what was not captured. The last one is what avoids the surprise on site.
