Why choose Windows Server Datacenter 2019
A single host carrying all the company virtual machines is convenient until it breaks. The classic way out is shared storage under two hosts, but an appliance of that kind costs more than the servers it has to serve, and in a company of twenty people it is not justified.
The Datacenter 2019 makes it unnecessary: Storage Spaces Direct pools the disks of two nodes and presents them as a shared volume, so virtual machines move from one host to the other with no external storage. Storage Replica carries the same volumes to a second site. With Microsoft support until January 2029, it is the release on which most hardware vendors certify two-node configurations.
What Windows Server Datacenter 2019 is and what it is for
Windows Server Datacenter 2019 is the complete edition of Windows Server: all the Standard roles, Active Directory domain, file and print, DNS, DHCP, remote access, IIS and Windows Admin Center, without the two virtual machine limit.
On the storage side this release brings Storage Spaces Direct with the read and write cache on fast disk, the Storage Migration Service that transfers an old file server with its name and permissions, and synchronous or asynchronous replication to a second site with no volume limits. User access is licensed separately with the Windows Server CALs.
What a two-node cluster really takes
- Two servers as identical as possible
Same model, same processor, same memory and same cards. A cluster built on two different machines works until a workload moves across, and then it stops. - Disks presented directly, with no hardware RAID
Storage Spaces Direct wants the disks presented individually. The controller has to be put in pass-through mode, not RAID: this is where people trip up most often. - A network between the nodes that can carry the syncing
Two 10 Gb cards dedicated to node-to-node traffic are the reasonable minimum. On a 1 Gb network the cluster gets built and then disappoints. - A witness to decide who stays up
If the two nodes lose sight of each other, a third element is needed to say which one carries on. A shared folder on any machine is enough. - The same edition on every node
Both servers have to be licensed Datacenter: Storage Spaces Direct does not work on the Standard edition, and a mixed cluster cannot be built. - Usable space is less than the disk space
Data is kept in two copies, so ten terabytes of disks leave under five. This goes in the budget before buying the disks, not after. - A backup is still necessary
The cluster protects against a node failure, not against a file deleted by mistake or against ransomware, which replicates onto both copies in real time. - Test the failure before going into production
You switch a node off on purpose, watch what happens and time the recovery. Doing it for the first time during a real failure is an experience to avoid.

System requirements
Windows Server Datacenter 2019 requires a 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor, at least 2 GB of RAM for the installation with a graphical interface and 32 GB of disk space, plus a Gigabit network adapter.
