Windows Server Standard 2016 is the Windows Server edition for the ordinary workloads of a company, in the cheapest release in the catalogue: it carries the domain, the shared folders and the printers of an office without asking for special hardware. Perpetual license for one physical server.

Why choose Windows Server Standard 2016

It often happens that you have the physical server and not the license: a machine salvaged from a replacement, a tower bought used, a host left without activation after a reinstall. In that situation the question is not which release is best, but which is the cheapest way to have a Windows Server that can be legally activated on that hardware.

The 2016 is that way, and on hardware a few years old it is also the most prudent, because the drivers for RAID controllers and network cards of that period were written for this release. Bear in mind, though, that Microsoft has set January 2027 as the end of extended support for Windows Server 2016: if the server has to last longer than that, the catalogue has the 2019, the 2022 and the 2025.

What Windows Server Standard 2016 is and what it is for

Windows Server Standard 2016 is the Microsoft server operating system in the Standard edition, the one meant for those with a physical server running the company network services on it: Active Directory domain controller, file and folder sharing with NTFS permissions, print server, DNS, DHCP, remote access and the web role with IIS.

The Standard edition includes the Hyper-V role and the right to run two virtual machines on the same server, on top of the system installed on the hardware. The 2016 is the release that brought Windows containers, Nano Server for light workloads and Shielded VMs. User access to the server must be licensed separately with the Windows Server CALs.

What to check before installing on a server you already have

  • RAID controller drivers
Windows Server does not see the disks if the controller is not recognised: the driver has to be downloaded from the server maker's site and loaded from a USB stick during the installation, not afterwards.
  • UEFI or BIOS boot, decided beforehand
The mode is chosen before starting and cannot be changed without rebuilding the disk. On hardware from 2012 onwards the right choice is UEFI.
  • Space on the system disk
The 32 GB stated as a minimum is enough on day one. A server receiving updates for years wants at least a hundred: running out of space halfway through an update is the most trivial and most frequent failure.
  • Fixed IP address
A server taking its address from DHCP stops being reachable the day the router restarts and hands out a different number.
  • Domain name chosen once and for all
The name is carried for years and changing it means rebuilding the domain. Use a dedicated internal name, not the same domain as the public website.
  • A second domain controller
If Active Directory runs on a single machine, on the day it fails nobody gets into the network. A second copy, even on a virtual machine, changes that day.
  • The backup has to be tested, not just scheduled
The system state copy is worth something only if somebody has restored it at least once on a test machine.
  • Access licenses have to be counted first
The operating system is not enough: every user or device using the server needs a Windows Server CAL, to be put in the budget before ordering and not after installing.

System requirements

Windows Server Standard 2016 requires a 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor, at least 2 GB of RAM for the installation with a graphical interface and 32 GB of disk space, plus a Gigabit network adapter. In production the resources should be sized on the active roles and the number of virtual machines. For detailed requirements see the "Requirements" tab on the product page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference from the Datacenter edition?
Standard includes two virtual machines, Datacenter makes them unlimited and adds Storage Spaces Direct and software-defined networking.
Are the CALs included in the license?

Until when is this version supported?
Security updates run until 12 January 2027. After that date the system keeps working, but without fixes.
