Windows Server Standard 2019 is the Windows Server release most widely found on company servers in service: Active Directory domain, file server, printing, DNS, DHCP and two Hyper-V virtual machines, with Microsoft support until January 2029. Perpetual license for one physical server.
Why choose Windows Server Standard 2019
On a server it is not only what the operating system does that counts, it is what runs on top of it. Business management software, accounting programs, professional applications and backup appliances state the Windows Server versions they are certified on, and the 2019 appears in more compatibility sheets than any other: it is the release vendors have tested most.
That is why the 2019 is the choice of those installing a server that has to host third-party software and do not want to find out afterwards that the vendor's support does not cover the release chosen. Microsoft extended support reaches January 2029, so there are years of updates ahead. Anyone starting from scratch with recent applications and wanting the longest horizon will find the 2022 and the 2025.
What Windows Server Standard 2019 is and what it is for
Windows Server Standard 2019 brings all the roles a company server has to cover: Active Directory domain controller with group policies, file sharing with deduplication and work folders, print server, DNS, DHCP, remote access, IIS and the Hyper-V role with two virtual machines included in the license.
This release introduced Storage Migration Service, which moves the data and identity of an old file server onto the new one without rebuilding the shares, and Windows Admin Center, the web console from which the server is administered in the browser. User access is licensed separately with the Windows Server CALs.
How many licenses it really takes to set up a server
- The operating system
One Windows Server license for each physical server: it is the one you are looking at, and on its own it authorises no access at all. - The Windows Server CALs
One for every person or device using the server services, files, printing and domain included. They are bought separately and are not included in the operating system. - User CALs or device CALs
You pick one form and do not mix them. User CALs suit people working from several devices, device CALs suit shared workstations used over several shifts. - The RDS CALs, if people work in remote sessions
They are a third license added to the first two, not a replacement. Anyone opening the remote desktop without them stops after the grace period. - The licenses of the published programs
Office and the business software running inside the remote session keep their own licenses, counted per user and not per server. - SQL Server, if there is a database
It is not included in the operating system and has its own licensing model, per core or per server plus CALs. - From the third virtual machine onwards
The Standard edition authorises two Windows virtual machines on top of the system installed on the hardware. From the third onwards you need another license or the Datacenter edition. - What you do not pay for
The network roles, the firewall, the built-in antivirus, Windows Admin Center and the administration tools are included: there are no separate licenses for those.
