Microsoft SQL Server Standard 2019 is the Microsoft relational database management system in the Standard edition, with a perpetual license. It removes the 10 GB limit of the free Express edition and adds SQL Server Agent, Reporting, Integration and Analysis Services. It supports up to 24 cores and 128 GB of memory. The license is delivered with its product key.
Why choose Microsoft SQL Server Standard 2019
SQL Server Express is free and perfectly fine as long as the database stays small. The problem arrives when it passes 10 GB and the business application stops writing, or when a nightly automatic backup is needed and you discover that SQL Server Agent simply does not exist in Express.
The Standard edition solves both: no limit on database size and scheduled job automation included. It also adds the tools for reports, data transfer between systems and analytical models, that is everything needed around the database and not only inside it.
What Microsoft SQL Server Standard 2019 is and what it is for
SQL Server Standard 2019 is the data platform business applications, company software and busy websites rest on. The 2019 generation introduced support for containers and Linux, intelligent query processing and improvements in memory management.
Extended support for this version runs until January 2030. The license covers the database engine on the server: check which licensing mode suits your scenario, because in some cases CALs are also needed for the users or devices that access the data.
Database backups: why copying the file is not enough
- The file is open and does not let itself be copied
While the service is running, the database files are locked. A copy made from outside with the service live, when it succeeds, nearly always produces an unusable archive. - The copy has to be asked of the engine, which knows when it is consistent
It is the service itself that produces the backup file, at a moment when the data holds together. That is the point, and it is no formality. - Full, differential and log backups do three different jobs
The first is everything, the second only what has changed since the last full one, the third the individual operations. Together they let you go back to a precise hour. - The operations log grows until it is backed up
It is the number one cause of full disks on management servers. It is not deleted by hand: you set a periodic backup and the problem stops existing. - The recovery model has to be chosen knowingly
With the simple model you go back only to the last backup. With the full one you go back to any moment, but you have to take care of the log. - A backup never restored is not a backup
The only proof that it works is putting it on another machine and opening it. It should be done once a year, and almost nobody does it. - Backups do not sit on the same disk as the database
If that disk gives way, they go together. They go on another drive, and at least one outside the building. - What this does not cover
Data deleted by mistake and discovered three months later. If the backups rotate over two weeks, that data no longer exists anywhere.
