Microsoft Windows 7 Professional is a perpetual license for the Windows 7 operating system, intended for anyone who needs compatibility with software and hardware no longer supported by recent versions of Windows. It includes XP Mode, Remote Desktop and domain join. Microsoft support ended in January 2020. The license is delivered with its product key.

Why choose Microsoft Windows 7 Professional

There is a category of computer that cannot be upgraded: the PC driving a machine tool, the station connected to a laboratory instrument, the terminal with a business application written fifteen years ago. In these cases the control software runs only on Windows 7 and replacing it would cost as much as the machine itself.

Windows 7 Professional remains the choice for these scenarios because it keeps compatibility with drivers, peripherals and applications designed for Windows XP and Vista, and includes XP Mode, a virtualised Windows XP environment for programs that not even Windows 7 runs natively.

What Microsoft Windows 7 Professional is and what it is for

Please note: official support for Windows 7 ended in January 2020 and the system no longer receives security updates. It is suitable only for machines isolated from the network or for industrial environments with control software that does not run on later versions.

Windows 7 Professional includes incoming Remote Desktop, domain join with Active Directory, file encryption with EFS and offline files to work on network folders even without a connection. The hardware requirements are the lowest among the Microsoft systems still distributed.

Keeping alive a machine with a system that no longer gets updates

  • The reason for doing it is nearly always a single one
A piece of machinery, a measuring instrument or a management program that does not exist for the new systems. It is a legitimate reason, and it has to be handled with a few precautions.
  • That machine must not browse and must not read mail
That is where nearly all the problems come through. A computer dedicated to a single task, with no browser and no mailbox, cuts the risk to a fraction.
  • The cleanest way is to put it inside a modern computer
The old system runs in a virtual machine on an updated computer. You separate what has to stay behind from what has to be on the network.
  • If it stays physical, it has to be isolated on the network
No access to the other computers and no way out to the internet, except towards the address it needs. You set it once on the router or the network device.
  • Memory sticks are the way in that is left
If the computer is not connected, the risk comes from what gets pushed into it. A single dedicated stick, which does not go round other machines.
  • That machine's disk has to be copied whole
Not the documents: the whole disk. If the hardware gives way, redoing that system with that program can be impossible.
  • The hardware ages before the software
Power supplies and disks fifteen years old are the real expiry. It is worth keeping spare parts aside while they can still be found.
  • The way out is looked for anyway
Asking the machinery's supplier whether an updated version exists is a question to repeat every year. Temporary solutions last as long as permanent ones.

System requirements

Windows 7 Professional requires a 1 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM for the 32-bit version or 2 GB for the 64-bit one and 16 GB of free disk space. These are the lowest requirements among the Microsoft systems still distributed, which is why it is still used on older industrial hardware. For detailed requirements see the "Requirements" tab on the product page.

Why are licenses priced so low?

As these are retail licenses previously owned and decommissioned by the former holder in accordance with EU Court ruling C-128/2011, they can be purchased at a more affordable price. These official licenses are fully compliant and guaranteed at the best price on the market.

Frequently asked questions

Does Windows 7 still receive security updates?
No: Microsoft support ended in January 2020, and not even the main browsers update it any more. That is why it should be kept away from the internet.
Why buy Windows 7 today?
To keep software and peripherals running when they have no drivers or compatible versions for Windows 10 and 11.
What is XP Mode?
A virtualised Windows XP environment included in the Professional edition, for applications that not even Windows 7 runs natively.
Is the license perpetual?
Yes: it is bought once, does not expire and has no annual fees.
Can I install it on a recent computer?
Often not: computers from recent years have no Windows 7 drivers, particularly for chipsets and network cards.
