What Autodesk Advance Steel is and what it is for

Advance Steel is based on AutoCAD and adds a specific engine for steel structure design. Profiles are selected from normalised libraries (EN 10025 for Europe, AISC for USA, AS for Australia) and positioned in the 3D model with intelligent constraints. Connections (bolted, welded) can be automatically designed by the software with structural verification.

The 3D model automatically generates the shop drawings for each piece, with all the dimensions, the assembly details and the bolt references. The bill of materials is extracted from the model on its own. The NC files for the CNC cutting and drilling machines are exported directly.

What actually reaches the fabrication shop

• Part marking comes before everything
  Every element gets a mark that follows it from the model to the truck. If the numbering changes halfway through a job, the shop assembles parts under two names and erection stops on site.
• NC files drive the machines
  The DSTV format describes holes, cuts and bevels in a language the numerically controlled machines read directly. It is what the shop asks for first, even before the drawings.
• General arrangement and detail drawings are two different things
  The arrangement says where the part goes, the detail says how it is made. Delivering only the first means somebody in the shop will redraw the second by hand.
• Bolt lists go with the drawings
  Diameter, grade, length and quantity for every connection. They are the first thing missing when the site stops for an afternoon.
• Automatic connections still have to be checked
  The program proposes the typical connection and its dimensions. The structural check stays with the engineer: the tool draws, it does not sign.
• Cutting lists reduce the waste
  Knowing in advance how many metres of each section are needed lets you order the right bars and optimise the cuts over the commercial length.
• IFC is for coordination, not for the shop
  You export to IFC to show the steelwork to the other designers inside the federated model. In the shop IFC is of no use: there they need NC files and drawings.
• What to ask the shop before exporting
  Which DSTV version they accept, whether they want the drawings in DWG or PDF and with which title block. Thirty seconds on the phone avoid a delivery to be redone.
